Moody International: In Focus

Moody-Halal Food Certification

The term "Halal" is used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic dietary laws. Halal food has always been an area of concern for Muslims in general, but particularly for those residing in non-Muslim countries as well as Muslim tourists travelling to the West and other non-Muslim countries as they are very sensitive to this issue.

The need to have confidence in the compliance to Islamic dietary laws is critical and therefore the Halal Certification along with Moody International logo make it an essential and creditable combination. This would therefore be vital to food producers and exporters from non-Muslim countries.

The Moody-Halal standard has been developed in Pakistan to ensure full compliance to Islamic dietary laws. It covers not only the issues related to slaughtering / Zabeeh but also considers the issues related to Halal ingredients, GMPs, and the like. Moody-Halal is a compatible standard with the guideline of HACCP and ISO 22000, and suppliers can achieve all at one time. Moody-Halal is applicable to all food production, processing (canned/packed food), hotels, restaurants and fast food chains.

The standard has been endorsed by the major religious authorities in Pakistan covering both Sunni and Shiah schools of thought who have issued Fatwa an Islamic verdict under reference no. (Hawala No) Jamia Ashrafia Ref 538/UMQ/06 & Jamea-Al-Muntazar Ref 100190. Therefore the acceptability of the Moody-Halal standard is global, within Muslim and non-Muslim countries.

This standard can also be considered as compatible to all Kosher food requirements as well.

To ensure continuing adherence to the Islamic dietary laws, Moody Pakistan has established an independent board to issue Halal Certificates under the guiding leadership of Islamic Scholar Maulana Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Ashrafi, Chairman of all Pakistan Ulema Council and Maulana Mufti Hameed-ullah who has the authority to pass fatwa (Islamic verdict) .

FSSC 22000 New Food Safety Application

Interested in Food Safety?

Since its introduction in 2005, ISO 22000 has never been fully accepted by retailers for certification of their suppliers, due to the fact it did not meet the detailed GFSI benchmark standard.

However, through the development of a "Publicly Available Standard 220" (PAS 220), sponsored by the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the European Union (CIAA), this standard, when used in conjunction with ISO 22000, allows retailers to accept this as meeting the GFSI benchmark standard, by introducing detailed pre-requisites to assist in controlling food safety hazards.
