A Global Problem

In a matter of decades, advances in technology and strategies placed marine fisheries around the world in a perilous position.
Newfoundland, Canada
The seed for a globally collaborative plan of action was planted in 1996. In an effort to address the looming crisis of rapidly depleted fish populations, and subsequently enhance sustainability, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) was established. With the World Wildlife Fund and Unilever serving as catalysts for its emergence, the MSC has become the chief proponent in the development of providing an industry-based solution.

If there's such a thing as becoming too successful for survival, it has surely been epitomized by the fishing industry. In an effort to recognize this, the Marine Stewardship Council devised a marketing campaign and introduced a certification and labeling program whereby all stakeholders could play a part in rebuilding fisheries to healthy levels.

Under the MSC's Sustainable Fisheries Certification Program, an environmental standard: Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing is used to assess fisheries worldwide. Assessments are not carried out by the Council, but rather by independent certification teams, including TAVEL Certification Inc., which are approved by the MSC. TAVEL is now ready to do its part to ensure that synergies are merged and players work together to enjoy the benefits of a sustainable supply of fish forever.

Who are We?

TAVEL Certification Inc. is a certification company approved by the MSC to conduct Sustainable Fishery Certifications and Chain of Custody Certifications.

What is Fishery Certification?

A client fishery (usually made up of one or more stakeholders such as fishery associations, government departments, individual fishing industry companies) becomes certified when it has been successfully assessed by an independent professional certification company (TAVEL Certification Inc.) against the MSC Standard: Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing.

Why Certify?

Certification of a fishery allows the consumer to have confidence that the fish product from that fishery is well managed and harvested at sustainable rates. Certification allows the companies sourcing product from a certified fishery to contract the use of the MSC Logo and Claim, which in turn allows consumers to make purchase selections based on sustainability of the fishery resource.
